For this project we were tasked with creating an object that nested within another object and also had a relationship with its container.
Doing research and drawing from Chiharu Shiota's 'The Key in Hand' exhibition at the venice Biannale in 2015 I wanted to recreate the feel but also relate it back to the human body.
Through this study I am experimenting with forced perspective and the transition the body feels when entering new areas.
The idea with the box is that it is to be a 1/4"=1' model of a gallery space where the viewers are staged in the front area then led down a green hall with walls producing a forced perspective to enhance the acceleration one feels through a corridor. When through the corridor the room opens up to being yellow and at the same ceiling height as the staging area.
As prompted by the instructor we were to construct a piece of furniture from one sheet of ply wood using the 3-axis router and focus on designing the joints.
I have had the idea for this project for a while leading up to this project but no clear route of how I could actually construct it. Then with this prompt and access to a router I jumped at the opportunity to challenge myself.
During my Digital Fabrication course the assignment was to create a repeating paneling system with the Rhino plug in Grasshopper.
Experimenting with different arrangements through grasshopper I found that by using a cylinder the shape could fit different areas depending on the amount of completion of the cylinder.
Using the 3-axis router I milled a mold and used it to create the panels, there are only two unique panels in the design and by changing the orientation of them you are able to create a full cylinder. As a result of the molding process corners were trimmed allowing the mold to release easier and also providing a splashing effect onto the panels.
My fascination with building and designing began with my father and grandfather of whom I would work in our small shop creating new designs. This inspired me to begin taking formal woodworking classes through high school and to continue to hone my craft through constant practice.
During this studio with instructor Cyrus Penarroyo we were given a site of a baptist church in the south side of Chicago near IIT. This church was originally a synagogue that was bought and transformed into a baptist church. During a restoration of the roof in 2006 a fire erupted and burned out the entire building, however, the massive brick and rough cut limestone walls are still standing.
Our prompt was to fill the space with a mixed use public gathering space that was open to the public.
My proposal was inspired by Greg Lynn and his 'Blobitecture' where these voluptuous shapes and their molds became inhabitable and took over the container creating in between space where people are able to gather, relax, seclude or perform with each other.
My fourth architecture studio was instructed by Ashley Bigham, she tasked us with looking at the corporation Amazon through the lens of refuge.
My focus was on Amazons immense distribution network around the US and the world and how it can be used for disaster and refugee relief.
As a proposed Idea for Amazon I designed a distribution center that would operate as a large scale disaster relief facility. Its curved structure allows for easy maneuvering for the truck drivers and tiered levels make room for the different functions it serves. On the ground level there are trucks moving packages around, the second level focuses on drones and the drone delivery system Amazon has in place, and the third is temporary houseing for truckers, workers or even victims if needed.
